On Saturday, September 27th, the North Jersey Blues Society presented another memorable installment of the Showcase Series: Different Shades of Blue at Factory Records in Dover, NJ. The intimate listening room provided the perfect backdrop for an evening that highlighted three distinct traditions within the blues—Hill Country, Delta, and Chicago styles—each brought to life by talented performers.
The night began with Gary Wright, who opened the show with authentic renditions of Mississippi Hill Country and Delta blues. His raw, heartfelt playing and soulful delivery immediately transported the audience to the roots of the genre, setting the tone for the evening.

Next up was Son Lewis, a master of Delta blues. Between songs, Lewis shared engaging short stories, giving the audience both music and context. His blend of storytelling and musicianship created a deeper connection to the traditions and history of the blues.

Closing out the night was a powerhouse trio: “Filthy” Rich Macpherson on guitar, Larry Ghiorsi on bass, and Steve Decker on drums. Together, they delivered a high-energy set of Chicago blues, filling the room with grooves that had the crowd moving. Their dynamic interplay and tight rhythms brought the showcase to an electrifying finish.

Different Shades of Blue truly lived up to its name, offering a journey through three essential genres of the blues. From the hypnotic pulse of Hill Country to the storytelling of Delta blues and the driving energy of Chicago blues, the showcase captured the depth and variety that makes this music timeless.
The NJBS thanks the artists, Factory Records, and all who attended for making this showcase such a special evening. Special shout-out to Pat Auriemma for the fabulous photos! Stay tuned for more upcoming events as we continue celebrating the blues in all its forms!
